What's a post processor and do I need one?

I was reading my bobcad manual. There's a library of post processors. I'm not sure what these are and if I would need some custom made post processors if I make my own cnc router?

A post processor is the last stage between Cad/Cam and Machine, it converts tool paths - tool offsets etc and programs G & M codes into a file to download to your CNC M/C, different machines require different implementation of codes etc, so you can either make your machine compatible with a common Post, or modify an existing post to suit your M/C.
