if you call a service tech for a small/large fee the will unlock it from the way I understand it on fanucs you can double what they already have as standard with a code, but to add anything more you need hardware

According to parmeter list given by machine tool builer in 18i/16i/21i Fanuc controller following is the paramter for memory, either it is use to add the addition memory hardware then set the bits according to that or you can check if the memory is locked.

    PM Bit Setting Purpose
    9921 0 00000001 TAPE MEM ADDITION 640M
    1 00000010 TAPE MEM ADDITION 320M
    2 00000100 TAPE MEM ADDITION 160M
    3 00001000 TAPE MEM ADDITION 80M
    4 00010000 TAPE MEM ADDITION 40M
    5 00100000 CHAMFERING, CORNER RADIUS
    6 01000000 READER/PUNCHER INTERFACE CONTROL 7 10000000 ATC CYCLE

and in Fanuc OM controllers the parameter is 901

    PM Bit Setting purpose
    901 0 00000001 TAPE MEMMORY ADDITION 320M
    1 00000010 TAPE MEMMORY ADDITION 120M
