    Poppabear10,

How would you compare Mach 3 to other programs such as Camsoft? I've looked at Mach 3 and just from what I've seen it seems to be more of a hobby system. I've been thinking of trying it, but wanted to hear from someone with extensive experience.

Yes, Lathe systems are very do-able, I have done regular lathes as well as a custom 5 Axis joglearn spinning lathe.

    bobk:

    First I will say this:
CamSoft is a Major advertizer here on this site, and thus has alot of influence at the top, so I will say that the below is My Opion and from My Experiences.

I like Mach ALOT better for reasons to numerous to list, alot of the retrofits about 25% of the ones that I have done. Have been on machines that had CamSoft on them. The users where never able to get it to work right. Cam soft sits on a Galil motion card, and they (In my opion), still dont quite have it right.
Mach can and Does sit Very well on a Galil external motion card, as well as a Smooth Stepper. For a High End industrial Machine with high count encouders, I would recommend a Galil or a Smooth Stepper depending on your buget and the bells and whistles you want.

I am sure the sales, marketing and other guys from Cam soft will holler and screen about this, but I just look at it from a realistic end user/operators perspective. Ever Since Mach made a plug in to work with External Motion cards like the Galil, and Smooth Stepper. It just flat dominates any one else doing PC based CNC. Since the Galil is considered by all as an industrial card, then Mach or anyother PC based software, just becomes a way to interface with it.

    Hello Scott,
Thanks for your responce. I'm asking these questions for my own research and do not wish to degrade any particular product. I have a Camsoft Pro version that I have not installed yet. Would you say that Mach 3 is as good or better than the Pro version of Camsoft? Can you give any reasons for your opinion? Thanks!

    Scott,

i'm trying to use the Mach 3 lathe right now and i find it very cumbersome to program compare to the "professional software" the big issue revolving around lack of canned cycles, like roughing and boring, etc. do you guys have software written for this or will the mach 3 lathe setup still leave alot of hand coding. ultimately i don't mind hand coding if i can use my mastercam turning software to output to native Mach 3, do you know if anything like this is available as a post processor?

I am not trying to degrade it eigther, I am just stating what I have personally seen and experienced. I have had service calls, and tried to get some of these machines working that had it on there, and no luck even contacting the vendor for tech support. So, just pulled it and replaced it, and that was that.

this guy has written several Post Processors for Mach3, he uses MasterCamX, and has post for 9 and X. He will also customize them for you for a fee, if you so desire.

The Lathe has a "Conversational" set of Wizards that will do most basic turning task.

here is the current canned cycle types according to the last published Turn doc:

    Drilling types:
    G73, G81, G82, G83, G83.1

    Boring types:
    G85, G86, G88, G89

    Threading:
    G32, G76

    Roughing:
    turn G77
    face G78

These are the official ones, I think there are some more that have been added but the docs havent caught up yet. I will post them, when I find out.
