Yes, Lathe systems are very do-able, I have done regular lathes as well as a custom 5 Axis joglearn spinning lathe.

First I will say this:
CamSoft is a Major advertizer here on this site, and thus has alot of influence at the top, so I will say that the below is My Opion and from My Experiences.
I like Mach ALOT better for reasons to numerous to list, alot of the retrofits about 25% of the ones that I have done. Have been on machines that had CamSoft on them. The users where never able to get it to work right. Cam soft sits on a Galil motion card, and they (In my opion), still dont quite have it right.
Mach can and Does sit Very well on a Galil external motion card, as well as a Smooth Stepper. For a High End industrial Machine with high count encouders, I would recommend a Galil or a Smooth Stepper depending on your buget and the bells and whistles you want.
I am sure the sales, marketing and other guys from Cam soft will holler and screen about this, but I just look at it from a realistic end user/operators perspective. Ever Since Mach made a plug in to work with External Motion cards like the Galil, and Smooth Stepper. It just flat dominates any one else doing PC based CNC. Since the Galil is considered by all as an industrial card, then Mach or anyother PC based software, just becomes a way to interface with it.
