Rick,
It is at a standstill since we have not been able to get our $hit together.
What are you building?

building a 2'x2' cnc with a moving table to make small parts for work and most of all for me!!!!!!!!!!
Rick,
A fixed gantry is a very good idea, they are super solid.
I prefer a moving table machine over a moving gantry 10 to 1 even though it takes move real estate.
Do you have any pictures of your build?
How long have you been on the South Side?

New guy here. On the deep southside... Joliet. Used to be in the industry a few years back and got out of it. Made audio and video panels and boxes for stadiums and stuff like that. I think im gonna jump back in and get my own machines. Would also be interested in getting something together.
A shameless, last-ditch effort to find someone local for this job:

(wrong) I know, I know...
I am interested, I live in Waukegan. I have a cummins mini-lathe partially converted to cnc. I am also getting a mill together.
I had posted this in another thread... But I'd like to resurrect this idea.

:stickpoke
Hey All,
I know its been brought up before, but I'd like to take on the task of organizing a Machine Shop / DIY Metalworking Club based in the Chicago Land region.
My goals for this club:
1. Form a club that revolves around metalworking in general and possibly other things...
2. Plan meetings once every 2 months or at least once a quarter (depends on "membership")
3. Nurture the DIY spirit and get people with a common interest together
4. Exchange information relating to metalworking
5. Educate and help each other out
Bright Future Plans:
1. Fully incorporate club to "make it official"
2. Eventually purchase / rent a "club shop" space for meetings and member projects.
3. Grow membership and club.
If you are interested please send your contact information to [email protected]
This idea is in its infancy, so initially no face to face meeting will be called only email exchanges. I'd like to judge membership before I put in the effort required to get this off the ground. I'm located in the St. Charles area about 35 miles West of Chicago. I do not have a web site for this yet, but that may change depending on interest. I will keep an eye on this thread over the next couple weeks and answer questions.
My background:
Engineer by degree
Own my own "home shop" w/ Bridgeport milling machine, South Bend Lathe, and other metalworking equipment/welders.
Diggin up Bones... Kinda resurrected this thread and idea in another CNC Zone post.

Hi all. New here and live in Plano il. For those that dont know where that is. Close to Aurora. I myself just built a cnc mill and have no idea how to work Mach3. I have everything setup just having an issue with g-codes and tooling offsets. I am looking to pay anyone who is willing to teach me the ins and outs. Let me know. Thanks guys.
BTW. Def down for meeting with fellow CNC people every month.
Greg
I am also down to meet up once a month or so. if there is anyone around let me know. GTPCNC i would love to help out but sadly im one of those "ill let the software do it all for me" people. I do everything in mastercam. I really do need to learn the ins and outs of mach3 as well.
Come on people. Let's put something together!

I'm In!!! let me know. I'm in the Wheaton/Winfield area..Just a newbee with Taig lathe and mill..would like to get together and learn more..
Jeff
Doesn't seem like anyone is interested at all. There is a hackerspace in Chicago called pumping station one. Check out some videos on YouTube. There is a walk through of the place. Other than that everyone is antisocial it seems.

Ok 3 of us are interested. No one else has even responded. Was just pointing out that spot in Chicago has actually got their **** together.

Make it 4. I'm still interested. Just didn't post for a while due to apparent lack of interest. Pumping Station One is a general hackerspace, as I understand it, and work on everything. To us metalheads, it would be little better than a simple hangout. Anyone who is still listening have any concrete ideas on how to proceed (if at all?)
We should decide on a central meeting spot and a day like: "meeting the third Saturday each month".
We can conference call with Teamviewer to plan logistics of the meetings etc.
