    Kurt DL600 Double Vise

I just bought 2 Kurt DL 600 Twin Vises. It looks like the jaws only have a
window of travel. The movable jaws will not fully close up on the fixed center
jaws. Is this how the vise operates or do I have something wrong. It looks
like each jaw will travel approx. 2.5".

    Thanks,

    Scott

Usually these double vises have a special collar on one end of the screw which may have to be loosened off to allow the jaws to float into position when clamping different width objects. Indeed, this float collar should be adjusted to give a bit of slack so that the jaws can accommodate a slight discrepancy in part width. That way you won't get a surprise loose piece.

Hope this helps. I have a cheaper clone vise which has about a 4" capacity in each side, but it will definitely close right up tight on both ends.
First you get good, then you get fast. Then grouchiness sets in.

Only 6 years too late with this reply:
The DL vices have two different lengths of swarf cover plate. You need the short ones to clamp small work.
(it is a footnote on this drawing)

Thanks for the long awaited reply. I still have the vises. Do you have to buy the shorter covers or just remove the long ones to clamp smaller pieces?

    Thanks,

I guess you have three options, according to budget and time. You could run without (the threads are all protected by seal), make some short ones (I think they are just flat plate) or buy some short ones for a surprisingly reasonable $8 http://www.kurtworkholding.com/doubl...1_75-l-en.html

(Though I would ring the number on the DL600 page rather than assume the DL640 fits)
