Please help with an optic interupt switch

I have been trying to get these optic inturrept switches going for a few days. I did some reading on google searches and such, but to no ivail. The photo diode side wors fine if I supply my own light. I am using the interupt on m lathe spindle.

I tried using seperate power supply before I got a resistor set from radio hack. I have multiple pieces so it's not just one that may be dead.

I am a little stalled here and any help would be great.

If it is just the emitter diode side not working, if using 5v supply for e.g. , taking a ~220ohm resistor from pin 1 to 5vdc and pin 2 to common, it should work.
The max LED current is 50ma, so if using it on a higher voltage, use ohms law to be well in range.

oh crap math,I got into machining so I didn't need math. alright I will work on some more today. I am about ready to shelve it for a few weeks.

as an after thought, at 50 ma max current, I can't see how the ones I've tested with are not fried ,so I will start with a fresh unit so as not to add to frustration.

    Thank-you

If you did not use a resistor, they are blown for sure!

I am sure they are blown. I already tested a non touched unit and it performed flawlessly. It was drawing 10 ma, works for me. Now will be a slight task of mounting a good unit to the spindle. Different packaging may interfere with the assembly but that will be easy compared to this electrical adventure. But now it seems so simple.
