    OKUMA FLOOPY DRIVE

I have several machines that the floopy drives are ba or going bad. Does anyone know what needs to be done to a standard floppy drive to get it to work with the okuma machines like the LU100 or 7000.

    Thank you,

    Matt

Okuma uses a proprietary file sturcture as well as communication protocol for their floppy drives. You must use one of their floppy drives.

Most Okuma's also have RS232 and standard "PIP" tramsfer,
it may be wiser to run cables to the machines from a slave transfer server and eliminate floppies altogether

or if needed DNC option fitted ( DNC option does cost $$$)

The newer machines can be network capable

Any old standard floppy drive should work, Barring that you can setup a RS232 to Enthernet

    Hi everybody

I am new in this forum. Very useful

Okuma uses industrial floppy , Maker : YE data . This is different than others. But you can buy from okuma an external floppy drive.

    From PC shop ~ $50
    3.1/2" floppy --- external--- USB -----WHY ???
this gives you 1.44Mb of data per disk

Thumb drive up to 16GB are available, if you use 4GB stick, thats about 25 floppies
Better and more reliable data transfers when you use cables ( RS232 or Ethernet )

How about a floppy emulator?I have a Dynapath controller with dead RS232 that needs a floppy upgrade.
Has anyone tried to replace theirs with a floppy emulator? As far as I know the emulator has a regular floppy outlet at the back and a usb port at the front. It can be configured to look like a regular floppy to fool the controller into
    thinking its a floppy.
Can it actually fool Okuma or Dynapath controllers yet has to be tried.
    Good luck!

I have been asked by one of my customers to round up some floppy drives for his Okuma's, Just to be clear, can regular floppy drives be adapted, I would find it strange if Okuma used proprietary interface?
Or has anyone actually hooked up the floppy - USB converter?
    What are the proven options?
    Thanks

Sorry can't help you out on this one.I've decided to save my dough and get a new motherboard so I can dnc.Breaking up my programs so they can fit on the floppy is getting old quick.I'd have the same problem fitting them on the emulator 1.44 max size but 100 of them if you like.
I know only a teak floppy can be used to replace my existing one.I can only assume that if you replaced the floppy in your customer's machine by the same make and model it should work.
Or models of emulators are now available in the US for half of what they were worth when I looked at them last year.
    Cheers!

This does not answer the purpose of the original question
Will this replace the drive configuration used by Okuma, a regular off the shelf Floppy drive does not work.

Hello. If you are talking about the External floppy you have to have to load software make backups etc that plugs into the outside bottom of the electrical cabinet, no you cannot use any floppy. The reason is that Okuma has a special pin configuration for the interface cable. Its not the floppy its the cable pin setup. If there is a device that will hook up to an old Okuma i would love to see it. Sorry but this is the Okuma way. As far as the slightly newer machines, I.E. 700/7000 control and up, the floppy on the side of the operator panel can be changed out. It is just a standard floppy. Anything E series or the new P series control you use a USB stick. Boy isn't technology great. Hope this helps. By the way i have an external floppy for the old Okumas i may be able to be persuaded to get rid of since i dont go out on the road anymore for Okuma's. For a nominal fee of course, but not bad.

    Hello Mr.emulator,
Can a large program be drip fed through your gizmo?I have programs that are over 1 Gig. that I must break up in order to fit them on floppies.A big pain it is also having to mod the program to go to home position and then back to the last coordinate to pursue where it left off and so on.Also the possibility of errors with this method, not to mention the floppy expiring at any moment and then having to start over.
Also as Al mentioned only specific floppy drives will work on the Okuma.
In my case only a Teak can replace the original on my Dynapath Delta 40,50,60 controller.
If I still have to break up programs,I don't see the point in a emulator over a new motherboard to drip feed directly from my pc. unlimited program size.

    Guys,

Please remember that the control only sees the floppy drive as 1.44MB. If you change the Floppy drive to a USB emulator the control will still only see 1.44MB regardless of the size of the USB thumb drive inserted into the emulator.

No. You need to have DNC-B or DNC DT/RT for drip feeding

    Hey folks,

A few months ago, I purchased a CNC/USB communication device from Shop Floor Automation. This is a great tool, hooks to a RS232 port and can transfer programs between ANY CNC and a USB flash drive and can even be used as a DNC. Setup was very simple and I have used this on Okuma controls, Fanucs, and Mitsubisis. It's worth checking out and very reasonably priced!
