    Switch mode power supplies

Are there any reasons to avoid using switch mode power supplies with size 23 or 34 stepper motors?

    Chris,
Switch mode Power Supplies can be used, but you will need a large capacitor across the output terminals. There are specific equations out there that can tell you how big a one to use, but in general, I use a 2000 - 10000 uF capacitor when I use a Switch Mode Supply. But in answer to your question, yes they can be used and used properly, but it is recommended that you use a large capacitor. Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Glen
