In a few weeks, cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. Call this number from your cell phone 888-382-1222. It is the national Do Not Call list, It blocks your number for 5 years.

I heard it's illegal for un-solicited sales calls to be made to a cell fone.

The authors of Colorado's popular "do not call" registry say it is time to prohibit telemarketers from making unwanted, unsolicited calls to cell phone customers.
Current state law prohibits telemarketers from calling residential phone customers who have put their names on a special "do not call" registry. To date, more than 1 million Coloradoans have signed up for the "no call" list.
"When you consider that the registry did not go into effect until July of this year, this law has been tremendously popular," said state Rep. Al White, R-Winter Park, who sponsored the successful "do not call" bill in 2001. The Senate sponsor was Sen. Ken Chlouber, R-Leadville.
"Now we are hearing complaints from wireless phone users," White said. "They say unsolicited calls from telemarketers can be doubly annoying since users are typically paying by the minute to receive calls they didn't want in the first place."
White said he and Chlouber will introduce legislation in the 2003 legislative session, which begins Jan. 8, to extend "no call" protections to cell phone users.
"By expanding the law to include cell phones, I really feel that we are fulfilling a desired service for the people of Colorado," Chlouber said. "This bill will make a popular law even better and more encompassing for all those annoyed by telemarketers."
Recently the Federal Trade Commission announced that it will be implementing a national "do not call" list. However, White and Chlouber noted that the FTC's list will apply only to telemarketers that cross state lines, not to those doing business in the same state where they're located.
"There are now just over 2,000 telemarketers registered to do business in Colorado, and approximately three-fourths of these are in-state," White said. "Therefore, we will be keeping a close eye on what the FTC is doing to make sure that its 'do not call' list does not preempt Colorado's list."

still think it's a hoax?
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20031013-2973.html
From what I read it is a 411 cell phone directory and it is "opt in." So yes, I still think it is a hoax.

Q. What steps have been taken to keep telemarketers from getting Wireless 411 numbers?
Telemarketers don't use voice 411 services to contact people and Wireless 411 Service numbers will not be put into any electronic list for disclosure to telemarketers. Additionally, telemarketing use of automated calling system to a wireless phone number is prohibited by law, and will still be illegal even if a consumer chooses to have their wireless number in the 411 service.
The wireless industry has historically advocated for these privacy measures and broadly supported the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act. The Wireless 411 Service was designed specifically to control all the opt-in wireless 411 listing information in a single privacy-protected database and release it only through qualified OSCs in single record responses to individual voice 411 requests.
The local news said this morning that in a few days every cell phone number in the US will be turned over to telemarketers. And that you have 3 more days to call the number above. Take it for what it's worth.

I've heard so many lies from 'local' news in the last few years I rarely watch it any more.
Take it for what it's worth? I do. It's not worth cr@p.
They're not news casters, they're opinionaters who are not interested in broadcasting news. They're only interested in making a buck and presenting their adjenda.
