If you get the machine pulled down, you should be able to get the numbers off the bearings and go to a bearing company ( like, say, Motion Industries ) and they can match the bearings up for you. It'll be a whole lot cheaper than trying to go back through the machine manufacturer (if they are still in business). I have to do this with a lot of the machinery at our shop. Hope this helps you out!!!
NOT all of the special features needed to insure PROPER bearing interchanges are found on the bearings.
Examples
Preload (very critical due to speed vs stiffness issues)
Radial runout (sometimes special vis use of ultra precision balls)
Select fits of OD or ID.
Noise qualification
SPecial grease or fill.
Axial runout specs
yes you can get close via the "numbers on the bearing" but not always
Do plan on having the ID taper reground. Failure to do so will/can result in a very unpleasant experience with tool runout/chatter that "magically appeared".
Revuilding the spindle is MORE than slapping in new bearings
Are you referring to a Precise brand spindle? If so, you may want to contact Fischer Precise USA Inc. Phone number is 262/632-6173.
I have no connection with them, just a long time customer.
