    Feedrate Wacky - HELP!

This is probably are very simple question to answer so here it is.
When cutting on a cnc 3 axis router, the feed rate can go as quickly as 80 ipm when cutting wood.
But, when I cut something that has more than 1 axis moving at a time in travel (like a 2 ½ D drawing) the federate goes way down.
In other words, when I am doing straight cuts I get 80 but if I am cutting something with the zed moving at the same time, federate goes WAY slower.

Is this a common thing to occur? What can I do to change this?

I have 2 different machines, 1 stepper and 1 servo and they both do the same thing.

    thanks,
    Steve

I did some googling and found this...

High Speed CNC milling machines working on 3D surfaces in any materials produce a finer surface finish and higher accuracy in less time that the traditional milling machine. Acceleration is the most critical factor that affects the high speed machining. Since one or more axis are always increasing or decreasing velocity in a 3-D cut, ultimate feed rate is directly related to acceleration

This leads me to think my acceleration rates are what to look for and for some reason mine are too low on 2 machines?

    ANY THOUGHTS???
