    First time CNC build...

    Hello All,

I am about to start building my first CNC machine today. I am going to build it out of MDF using some of the ideas that I have spotted on this site over the years.

My backgound is in Electrical Engineering and metal work. I have decided to build my first router from MDF since I have most of the tools to work with it at home.

I will try and get some pics up soon.

Here is the base that I built up on the weekend.

I plan to just use threaded rod for the motion at this stage.

    16mm MDF with rebate joints.

I will glue the joints later once its all fitting together well.

Here is the complete base. I will mount linear rails and then start on the gantry.

    More Pics soon!

Expecting some motors and drives this week. I have a controller PC and a case to house it all ready to go.

    Motors...

I bought a few motors for the X and Y axis off a guy in Hong Kong for $50USD each.

Here is a rough spec direct from the add.

    *************************************************
HIGH TORQUE CNC NEMA 23 Stepper Motor 28kg.cm

HIGH SPEED HIGH TORQUE 28KG-CM (390oz-in)

    SHIFT DIA 8mm x 20mm LONG

Max 3000rpm 1500rpm with half Torque

    DOUBLE SHIFT AVAILABE FOR ASK

    4A PER PHASE 6 LEADS

    SIZE : 57mm SQ X 118mm LONG

    Weight 1.6 KG

    IDEA FOR CNC MILL CONVERSION
    *************************************************

The drivers are coming from the same guy.

I have a 750W PC power supply to use that is capable of 32A @ 12V

I plan to use MACH3 on an old P4 that I will mount up in a hard plastic case.

    More pics tomorrow!

    Motors and Drives have arrived.

I have also built up a touch screen to use on an old 17inch LCD monitor. Cost $140 to get it working.

Threw them on a test bench today and the drivers work well.

I will take some pics and upload them asap.

have you thought about other power supplies? Those motors will need more than 12v.

I will start them off on a 12V system. The drives have inbuilt current limiting that I will set at around 4A.

Eventually, I will go to a 72V system (as specified by motor/drive manufacturer) to increase rapid feed rates and torque.

I have tested them on a 12V 3A bench top supply (motors unloaded of course) and the performance is acutally reasonable. They are not real good at high speed as you would expect.

I will try and get some pics tomorrow if the weather is good here. Most of the basic electronics sorted. Just putting it all in a case at the moment.
