anti-backlash leadnuts for std threaded rod

    Hi gang,

I hope this is the right place to put this...

I started making anti-backlash leadnuts for standard size threaded rod and wanted to let everyone know. Backlash is a big problem with home built cnc and I ended up making my own leadnuts and decided to make other sizes to sell.

As of this writing I have 3 sizes: 1/2-10 acme, 1/4-20 UN, and metric M6 x 1, but can custom make other sizes.

    Thanks,
    Tim

What's the advantage of 2 start rod over standard Acme threaded rod?

It has higher leads, and is a bit more efficient (for Acme).

Like ger21 said. These are actually 1/2"-4 threads, however there is 8 threads per inch. You could say that there are (2) 1/2"-4 threads, 180 degrees apart.

sendkeys: Thanks for your good wishes, I hate it when people jack up the s/h charges to make a few extra bucks. It costs me .83 cents to ship 4 of these in the US + .50 cents for the bubble mailer, I have no problem covering that!

For those who e-mailed me about standard 5/16"-18 anti-backlash leadnuts, they are now ready on my web page.

Tim, how bad is the regular (not precision) Acme rod? You talk about polishing it. I don't know how well that can be done.

    Hi Fred,

Depending on the screws you get, they can be pretty rough. A good sanding/polishing of the screw will greatly extend the life of the leadnuts. The smoother the screw is the longer they will last, this goes with any leadnuts, not just mine. It's not hard to get them smooth, a lathe works best, if you don't have access to a lathe, you can put the leadscrew in a hand drill and spin it holding sand paper first then Scotch-Brite or other type of polishing pad.

    New sizes

I just added two more sizes for a total of 8 sizes currently stocked. I've been getting some great feedback on these anti-backlash leadnuts and will continue adding more sizes.

The new sizes available are ACME 1/4-16 and Metric M10x1.5

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi Tim! Neat idea!

How much force can these handle? A standard nut/spring/nut arrangement can handle a certain amount of force before it shows backlash. How do these work? I assume you'd use them an a cnc wood/plastic router situation rather than a metal milling machine, right?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jeff,

These work differently than the nut-spring-nut design. On mine, the spring pushes the sleeve against the angled end of the leadnut which compresses the threaded fingers onto the screw. They will take a lot of force, how much? I'm not sure, I haven't pushed one to the breaking point, though I've tried. It would have to physically break the sleeve or threads.
Of course, I wouldn't use these on a Bridgeport conversion for obvious reasons, but I use them on my router and on my mini-lathe which I cut steel and aluminum on with no problem, they work well. I'm doing a Sieg 2 mini-mill conversion this summer which I'll use these on, I believe they'll work fine.

I now have 3/8"-12 ACME available on my website. I am also setup to make 3/8"-8 ACME, but don't have them on my site yet, email me if you need that size.

    Thanks,

I notice that you have 1/4 Acme anti backlash screws as well now.
Do you know of a good source for that size threaded rod too?
    Thanks.

    Hi Bill,

Right, I added 1/4"-16 ACME lead nuts and I have a McMaster-Carr part # for the screws listed on my web page.

I also just added 1/2"-10 ACME 2 Start (5 turns per inch) from a custom job.

    Thanks,
    Tim

Do you sell ACME lead nuts for the 5/8"-10 ACME 1-start screw?
