I have recently received my Torchmate, torch hight controller. I haven't had a chance to fully test it yet, but I think there is a problem. The lifter unit is vary sloppy.It doesn't have a quality ballscrew, just a brass nut on a machine thread, and as I say, it is very sloppy, there is an awful lot of backlash. I can't see how it's going to achieve the sort of accuracy thats required. I suspect that the lifter unit on my controller might be faulty. Has anyone else got one of these torch hight controllers, that can tell me if this is typical of Torchmate, torch height controllers? As I'm not getting any helpful response from the Torchmate tech people themselves.

For your torch height controller, isn't the torch always pressing DOWN on the leadscrew? Gravity is the anti-backlash factor here. Your main concern will be the quality of the height control electronics!! Having a suitable pierce height first (so you don't get spashback), and then controlling the height as you cut is the second important factor.
