    Question Power Supply

I was wondering what you would recommend for a power supply or supplies. I running 3 powermax II 200in/oz steppers, parallel wired with a xylotex 3 axis board.

I've been pretty happy with this one.

You have to attach a power cord, but its very simple to setup.

    Moto21,
Check ebay, I got this 24 vdc 3.6 amp PS for $10.50. Put it in anoter case ($7.00) and ended up with a really nice PS.

trying to figure this all out

as for these power supplies..... suppose i have 4 motors, 1.2 v 3.8 amp each.
Am I right in thinking that neither of the 2 above mentioned PS would work?
Wouldnt I need a PS at least 15.2 amps?
I dont have any motors yet, just trying to figure out what will work.
    Thanks,
    John

It depends on the drive. Assuming your'e using the bipolar Xylotex, the drive has a max output of 2.5a, but due to the way chopper drives work, you'll never need more than about 2/3 of that for each motor, usually even less than that. Just figure on 2/3 of 2.5, x4 which is around 6.6. The 6.5a supply above should be fine.

johnt....okay....we're guessing "steppers"....and the 3.8 amps is the total for 2 phases....so 15 amps X 2/3....and 10 amps is your answer....but this is based on your info which is kinda skimpy, so this is just SWAG.

Viper, where did you get the 15a from? The Xylotes (and Geckos) only need 2/3 of the rating of a SINGLE phase. So my 6.5a is still the right answer, for 4 axis with the Xylotex Bipolar board. Assuming the Unipolar drive is similar, 4 motors at 3a/phase x 2/3 = 9 amps .

Go back and read "johnt" posts. He did not specify which driver he was thinking of using....there are 2 threads within this thread..."johnt's" is the 2nd thread. You based your answer on the maximum capabilities of the Xytotex board. (chair)

    Thanks, Viper,
I guess I didnt realize how the choice of drivers affects so much else.
So, to answer that question, I'm not sure which driver I plan to use.
First I thought Gecko was the no-brainer choice. Then I considered Hobbycnc and Xylotex because of the vast price difference. Now I'm not sure if anything other than Gecko will suit my application. (No offense to HCNC or Xylo)
Any help sorting this out is appreciated.
Here are some sppecs on my table.
    4x5'
Yaxis driven from both sides by rack and pinion.
Future Z axis to accomodate torch height control.
    Probably use Mach2 and Sheetcam
    Probably Hypertherm Plasma
    Thanks,
    John
