I have a problem with my Taig CNC Mill.. x-axis mechanical movement

    Hi fellow machinist
I have a bit of a problem with my Taig CNC Mill and I'm looking for some help.

The X-axis motor housing is able to turn 10 degrees or so around the motion screw... This makes it possible for the motor to push the motor housing around a short bit every time it changes direction. Which makes for very bad accuracy
All other axis are solid and allow no movement.

Is there some way to tighten it? There is one pin going into the side of the mounting plate but I'm unsure as it just seems to be a press fit pin?

I'll have a video up later explaining more clearly what the problem is...

    Thank you for your help!

Refer to this page to see how the stepper mounts work.

Basically the tube screws onto the threaded area just inboard of the micrometer dial then that ring around it clamps the tube tight to the threads. In the last picture you can see the set screw that tightens the ring down. That is what you need to tighten.

Oskar, have a look at the picture below. I have a line drawn to the threaded area. Is this part turning for you? Or is it the blue collar that is threaded on to it (I know yours is black).

I couldn't really tell from the video.

    Hi.
    Thanks for your replies.
The whole thing is turning including the threaded part and the motion screw.

Ok, I believe that split pin is the culprit here but I will not comment as I have never removed it, so I will let someone else who has more experience in this area chime in-.

They'll be along soon, I'm sure-

Ok.. this is as far as I get.
The problem is that the two peaces (Red arrows) can move in relation to each other about 10 degrees.

I'm guessing that the pin (Green arrow) is holding them together..?

    How can I fix this?
And how do I get the outer peaces (Pink arrow) off the lead screw?

    Anyone know?

Well, I can help with the first piece. (The one I colored green) It is the inboard side of the stepper motor coupler. It is just press fit to the shaft and has a keyway to keep it from rotating on the shaft. You can use a flat head screwdriver in between that and the micrometer dial to GENTLY loosen it up and slide it off the shaft.

That part I know for sure.

(This part is more of a guess.) I think that you may be able to just slide the micrometer ring off of the shaft once the coulper half is off.

    Ok.
Problem fixed and my taig is working better than ever.
The stop-pin had taken damage and wasn't able to hold everything in place.
Got everything apart and drilled and inserted a new stop-pin from the other side.
    Very solid.

Good to hear, Oskar, so you replaced the roll/split pin that you have the green arrow pointing to in your picture above?

    Thanks,
    Dave

First I tried to drill out the split-pin. But that was impossible so I decided to let it stay there and insert a new pin along the same axis as the lead screw. Worked very well. : )
