I'm trying to locate a replacement material for a Crucible product Maxel 3-1/2. It is my understanding that 4150 modified re-sulfurized is best substitution but it appears this material is only available in a pre-hard condition and I need an annealed bar. I really feel that the main reason the Maxel 3-1/2 is used is for the sulfur to improve machinability. Does anyone have a recommendation for a substitute material for Maxel 3-1/2?

Crucible is still around and may still make the product. The distribution channel is completely screwed up though. The old crucible service centers are now selling Carpenter stuff as SB Specialty Metals www.sbsm.com and Crucible is now selling through Niagra and Latrobe.
