Re: Share your 3D Carving files, Parts or Art

I'll try again in the proper thread this time, here's the latest 3D carving I've done, a bit of an ornate frame finished in a mild gothic/antique style paint finish, for an oil painting.

I used 20mm high density polyurethane (HDPU) foam sheet glued to a 12.7mm thick MDF sheet. Pretty happy with the results. As I used pearlescent paints, the colours are quite a bit more vibrant than the photos show without being overpowering or too bright, I still suck at taking pics it seems.

The model was from one of the earlier links in this thread.

    cheers, Ian

Re: Share your 3D Carving files, Parts or Art

Thanks gents, this is the frame with the painting, again my photo skills are pretty crap so it looks a bit drained of colour. The frame I got from a Russian site, he has some exceptionally good quality 3D models there:

    STL. ?????? | ART-FOREST

The model I used I cut out the middle graphic protion, and added an extruded frame to allow me to rebate 1.5mm around the insides from the back, so the painting is a really nice friction fit inside the frame and the slight rebate means no air gaps or frame covering up the edges of the painting.

HDPU is just a dream to machine, but I must admit given the incredibly high cost, it's a little more rougher a finish than I would have expected. As it's a foam, there's lot's of really minute air bubbles which make the surface a little rough, and it takes a bit more effort to get a smooth finish on it.

Much, much, better for 3D stuff like this than just plain MDF however.

    cheers, Ian

Hi there.. thanks for kind and positive remarks.... glad resources are still of some use. I'm busy on something else, related to cnc_toolkit, at the moment.. but at some point it's my intention to apply the site update to cnc4free that I've had archived since about 2012...

In the meantime... relief modellers might light to take a look at this... Extrudy..... Best featured FREE standalone heightmap to STL to date....

That's strange, they're just bog standard STL's, are you sure the files you downloaded weren't corrupted?
