I've got a 40(x) x 30(y) stepper driven router. I am using dual drive motors on the "X" axis to eliminate racking of the gantry. It runs very well MOST (90%+) of the time. Every once in a while, the X motors will stall during acceleration from a stop if the current reduction has kicked in. I'm currently using Hobby CNC's Pro driver board and their 305 oz-in motors. I also have a CNC4PC board that I'm using to provide step and direction signals for a second "X" motor driver instead of using MAch 3's slaving function. My gantry weighs about 25 pounds, router and all. Will a Gecko improve the reliability of my X axis motors? Which one should I use (knowing I'll be using one for each of the X motors) and what capacity of power supply? I'm inlaying custom cutting boards and if the router screws up in the middle of pocketing the board for the inlay, the board's in the trash!
