    3 phase motor identification??

How can I tell how many poles a 3 phase motor is? I am looking for a 4 pole motor, but I cannot tell by looking at used motors on ebay how many poles they are. I was thinking anything 1700-1800 RPM would be 4 pole?? Does it have anything to do with how many connections there are?

On 60hz the 4 pole motor will be in the 1700's rpm wise, 2 pole will be something under 3600 rpm (3470 typ).
