I haven't posted in this section for a while as i've been building a Mechmate and have been active on their forum, but I have been asked to share a few pics here on the 'zone. So here they are.

I started the build in April and did the first cuts today. i'm very very happy with it but still have a few small things to finish off. Control buttons on the gantry, Z height gauge etc.

matty i spend a fair amount of time watching the mechmates on thier forum, gerald was an early proponent and poster on the shopbot forums and helped a lot of people along the way, that machine is one of the best i have seen!!

Thanks for the kind words Jim, there are a lot of great machines being built on the MM forum. Gerald has put together a great drawing pack to work from. I have been lurking a bit watching some of your posts on Rockets threads. You do some amazing work with your routers.

Matt, That is one awesome looking CNC Router.

I see there is no compromise in materials used. The table looks extremely strong. The RHS is bigger than a lot of commercial machines use, and the thickness of the side rails is incredible.

The engineering that has gone into the moving parts is amazing.

Talking about time constraints - You work long hours in a demanding vocation, have a family to look after, and still did this in 4 short months.

Great looking machine, congratulations. Could you post some video as you start using it? I was following the Mechmate forums a couple years ago and thought i might build one. There were several deals guys were putting together here in the states to get group purchases on kits of the sheet metal laser cut and formed parts. I recently built the Joes 4x4 which is my first cnc and works great, especially in my limited space. I'll have to go back and check out the Mechmate forums again to see what I've missed.

Absolutely jawdropping machine! I hope to make one like this someday - prrobably out of reach but one can dream

BTW: I have never seen this addressed before, but can the mechmate tool steel with any amount of success??

That's a superb machine It looks like it takes a full standard sheet 2400 x 1200? Pity I don't have room for a machine on this scale....

Nor do i really... the car sits outside now but yes, its takes a full 1220x2440 sheet. It actually has about 1300x2500 travel so it can surface past the edges of the full board.

Yes, will try and find a place that does cheap vinyl letters so i can get my serial number.

Not sure about machining steel. Doubt it. I know others do Aluminium easy. But have to do shallow passes.

Looks very nice, a good job, I'm in the way to build a mechmate too, but the geared steppers sugessted by Gerald are very expensive an hard to find in México, Could you share with me the specs of your steppers and the relation of your belt reducer?.

How have you configured the bearing/spindles on the reduction units?
