    live tooling accuracy???

Looking to purchase Puma 600/700 with live tooling.

Does anyone have experience of the live tooling on these machines or any other lathes with relation to accuracy.

We would be creating PCDs of holes up to 800mm diameter with 0.002 true position.

My concern is that when we are carrying out heavy turning work and come up against the occasional machine crash the turret will lose its accuracy.

Also, does anyone use the live tooling for anything more complex than holes.

    Creating slots, flats etc.

Just interested to here your opinions.

    live tooling

Don't know about accuracy on the Daewoo, I can tell you about the Mori and Okumas though. Those both are quite accurate and yes, IF THE TURRET IS STRAIGHT. Flats milling without Y axis will leave a line in the center of the part as the C axis reverses direction, some people can live with it, some can't. Also happens when trying to mill a hole off center. Hope that helps and good luck with your project.

Do not buy a live tool lathe without Y-axis!! If you do you will soon wish you had. The Y-axis will allow you to do so much more such as mill off center without all kinds of crazy fixtures. The Y-axis is also mandatory for critcal tolerance. With the extra axis you can use a co-axial indicator and sweep a datum or diameter and dial in your turret to within a couple tenths.

Sure a good c-axis machine can achieve critical hole and slot locations. The only problem I ever encounter is if the milling heads are removed and later put back in, it can be a pain to get them alligned to one another.

You can really rock n roll with these machines and get great results at any process such as drilling, tapping, slotting, threadmill, contouring, even broaching, but attention to setup is paramount.
