    Mach3/G540 Steps per inch

How do you determine the steps/inch when using a G540? Doesn't the drive change the microsteps automatically? And why does the G540 XML file use 20000 steps per unit? What size linear drive did they use to come up with 20000? Should I just leave this value? What value do I use if I want to change to inches?

    Hi AC.

The G540 ALWAYS micro steps, so SPI settings are: motor pulses x micro steps x TPI.

I don't know what you are driving with the G540, but here's a ball screw example:

200 pulses to turn motor shaft 1 revolution.
    10 micro steps
    5 TPI ball screws

200 x 10= 2000 x 5 = 10,000 SPI give or take a couple hundred tweaking to allow for mechanical differences, metric screws etc.

The Morphing to full step mode is an internal electronic thing that ends up improving top speed condsiderably--but you still set up for 10 micro steps.
