I'm tempted (because I'm now living in Connecticut), but it can be tough to get to the other side of the pond.

For the earlier poster in Westchester, though, he might be interested in looking up a Connecticut-based group of home machinists:

I have seen the Gadgetbuilder site and it's great- that looks like a great group.

For those also in Queens, (Bayside, Whitestone), the Long Island Group we are trying to get together may be more convenient.

I have a shop in Long Island City, Queens. Check it out:Gotham Machine

I do some machining but I wouldn't consider myself a pro machinist.

I might be willing to host some meetings if there is interest.

I'm still willing to host if there is interest. I'm located in Long Island City, Queens. Near 7,E,M,G subways, LIE, Manhattan ect.

I have a scratch built CNC lathe (http://www.cnczone.com/forums/vertic...ate_lathe.html) and a CNC vertical mill retrofit that I'm wrapping up (http://www.cnczone.com/forums/vertic..._retrofit.html). Also, a bridgeport series I 2j head and I'm on the lookout for a medium sized manual lathe.

    Let's schedule a meeting!

We want to get a meeting together at Will's place of NYC machinists. Can we get some indication of who here would be able to attend, and what the best time in the late afternoon or evening (or weekends) would be so that we can decide on a time when the most people can attend?

    Thanks!

Newbie from Eastern LI. I have zero machining experience but I'm getting ready to start a CNC router/plasma table build.

    Anthony,

We're trying to get a group together at Will's place in LIC, Queens. Would you be interested?

We need those interested to let us know so that we can set it up.

Yes, I would be interested in getting together.

Is this going to be a recurring thing? I'm over an hour away, not sure how often I would be able to make the trip.

I'll stay tuned for more info.

If we can get a good, interesting group together I was thinking about doing it once every month or two.

I guess I'll lay out some thoughts to try to drum up some more interest.

Here are my two CNC builds:

Tree vertical mill retrofit : http://www.cnczone.com/forums/vertic..._retrofit.html

    Scratch lathe build: http://www.cnczone.com/forums/vertic...ate_lathe.html

I'm interested in all aspects of making things.

    Some potential group activities:
    1. Help on cnc projects. I'm not an expert but between the two builds I've picked up quite a bit. Mach3, LINUXCNC, gecko drives, Mesa I/O, AMC drives, VFDs etc. I also want to set up a MPG pendant for the mill so if people are interested in working on that I'd be happy.
    2. Show and tell. People bring in what they are working on.
    3. Group builds. Model engines or whatever.
    4. Discussion. Whatever topics we can come up with. If we have experts we could do a lecture type event.

    Let me know your thoughts.

I am a rank newbie trying to learn manual machining first. I would like to know how to operate a lathe, a mill, how to restore an old American mill, turning, milling, maintenance, lubrication, measuring. We can probably have someone come in.

Either way, Will, I would like to attend. After work like 5:30 is best.
