    Micro-drilling, looking for drill chuck

    Hello Micro-drillers...

I'm looking for a very small drill chuck to hold drill bits as small as .007"

    Any suggestions?

Use a pin vise in a standard chuck?

Albrecht claims that several of their chucks will go down to 0 inches, maybe ask them about their smallest series - 0-1/16".

Use a Starret Pin Vise in an ER32 collet holder, or search for a Proxxon collet that will hold that size (you need a ridiculously high spindle speed to use that drill effectively)

    micro drill

I think most drills in the micro catagory have much larger shanks than the actuall drill diameter.
A very good collet will work.
Runnout will be another big issue besides the speed.

Hmmm....... a Tormach EDM attachment, there's one for the R&D dept.
    Cheers

I was just doing this very thing this afternoon. I use a sensitive micro-drill adapter:

for example. I pause the spinning spindle over the hole but actually do the drilling manually using this touch sensitive micro chuck. Its designed to handle these small drills with proportionate run-out and the tactile feedback minimizes broken bits. I haven't done any .007" holes yet but I did several
.015's. They work pretty well. - Terry

I've drilled holes in aluminium as small as .005" on the Tormach. Everything is in the way you do it. Very small peck, with full coolant pressure and patience. But yes, the drill had a 1/8 shank.

My old chuck was a Albrecht in a Er20 holder. After a miss step in Z axis... he is now dead...

    Thank's
