    Multicam 3000 stepper motor

    Hi all,

I have a late 2004 multicam 3000 router that I believe needs a new z- axis stepper motor. The machine lost it's z-axis position so I pulled it apart and found I could move the stepper motor while powered up. I'm most certain I shouldn't be able to do this.

Am I wrong to assume the stepper motor is shot or could it be something else? Also, if it is shot, can I expect to be able to replace it without going through the manufacturer?

The motor is made by Superior Electric, type KML092F-122

    Thanks,
    Steve

It's more likely the drive than the stepper. Easiest way to tell is to swap the drives with a different axis, and see if the problem moves to the other axis. If not, it's the motor. If the other motor can be turned by hand, it's the drive.

If it is the motor, and you can figure out the voltage and current ratings, you should be able to find a similar motor for much cheaper. Looks like it's a 600 oz-in motor, but I couldn't find the exact specs.

Thanks for the tip. I tried switching motors and sure enough, the motor is junk. I also found out Multicam has replaced that motor. not sure with what type.

I will update as get closer to an answer.

    Just a follow up, the motor's specs are 1.4 VDC 7.0 AMPS 200 steps/REV connect per 213803

I've been unable to find a source that offers all specs. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Angry Stepper motor update

OK, new stepper motor and the problem still exist. I ran a job today and the machine lost its z axis calibration. Once again I pulled it apart and ran the same test as before, I switch the motor to another axis and I can still turn the motor, not easily but intermittently. As far as the other axis go's, I haven't removed the motor though I've tried to push the head unit that it drives (on the gantry) and it doesn't seem to want to budge. This is the same test I ran before to determine it was the motor. It must be non mechanical unless it's the brake (not sure if it's called a brake) that sits on top of the z axis ball screw. I hate not knowing inside and out, any machine I own or operate. Guess it's time to learn.

    Anybody?

It is not the brake. The Z would not move if the brake was engaged.

I know this but I'm not sure that it hadn't interrupted positioning. The noise I hear is a groaning sound giving me the impression that there was some resistance while moving to it's intended position. I think it may be the card though, I'm running some test on it right now to see if that's it.

    Thanks for the reply,
    Steve
