ebay Router I purchased for my nephew

I purchased this for my 15 year old nephew.
I got a good price. That being said, I now have started making improvements to it.
First the bed was mounted on 2 flimsy aluminum (that's aluminium for our friends across the pond) U channels. The bed was nowhere near flat.
I replaced those with 1'' square steel tubing. Now the bed is flat.
The 1/2'' rails are unsupported so it flexes. Not a cheap fix unless I just up the size.
The Z axis is really sloppy. I definitely need to redo the rails on that as it is short and a not too expensive fix.
I am installing a wood brace across the gantry uprights to cut down on the racking.
The gantry also racks when changing direction. I am still working on a cheap fix for that.

I can't really say anything bad about the unit as the electronics that came with it would have cost me 3/4's of what I paid for it.
I do feel real bad for the people that I see paid way more than I did.
Over all it is a decent starter unit for someone just getting started and doing it on the cheap.

Some of these machines are built just to learn how to make one work and to learn the software with no real concern about whether it can cut anything accurately. If your nephew learns how to draw parts, generate gcode, and cut parts with this machine he can run any machine out there with some additional training, or be driven away from CNC forever. It's his choice. We can hope he wants to build a big, lean, mean CNC'n machine for his second one. Or help you build yours.

He is a really smart kid. He is interested in and bugging me to help him make a robot.
I think this will be right up his alley.
I think my sister will like it as he wastes way too much time gaming.

He will waste a lot of time CNC'n too, but at least it will keep his mind actively engaged in something more useful.

Ye get him into CNC quick before the scent of the fairer sex fries his brains. (nuts)
Too much gaming will be the least of your sisters worries then, but if it's any consolation to her it could be worse.??? . . . . She could have had a daughter, now there's trouble. .:wee:

Edit: Good buy by the way.!!
