First ill introduce myself, my names John 22yr old with 2 kids (and a nagging misses who wants more) We live in Pakenham.
Been searching around for a while to build my own CNC router as buying them is just a bit expensive at the moment. I was looking to get a kit like Joes or the Blackfoot but once postage is added I might aswel buy a CNC from china.
Im looking for someone in Melb who has built a DIY cnc and is happy to share some information with me and let me look over their setup. Once i get a good visual of a real up front timber router ill have amuch easier time building it, can bring over some beers and jyst chat for a little while.
Any help would be great and metric plans even better
I’m surprised no one has replied to you. I’m a fan of Joe’s designs and I too like the simplicity of the Blackfoot. I myself built a jgro as my first router but am currently in the process of building my second machine; It’s quite a bit like the Blackfoot. I am experimenting as I go. Your welcome to come over and bring that cold beer but it would be a long hike… very long. You’re welcome to follow along my build and ask questions, I’d be happy to help if I can.
Hi John, there are quite a few builders in Melb, myself I am way up at the pointy bit of the country so the drive will take a while, besides I wouldn't advise copying my first build
The guys down there have CNC BBQ's every now and then, keep an eye out for the next one, you will get all the information you ever need and more. Other than that have a look through the Aussie builds for ideas as well as parts sourcing information, very handy for this part of the world.
I pretty much thought the VIC end of Aus was dead in the way of CNC, no one I ever hear of does anything down here.
I decided on building a JGRO becuase its fairly easy to do. Ive bought a Gecko Kit that includes:
3 x G251's
3 x 269oz motors
1 x Break Out Board
I Have a small build log on my website, http://www.johnhobson.ws/cnc-router - It hasnt been updated in a while but the only difference is that I have sourced the Electronics now.
I am building the Bed and final Timber construction parts this weekend most likely as I have a long weekend off.
I am learning to do metal casting ATM and am going to cast my Leadscrew Bearing Mounts and Adjustment Blocks from alloy and machine them up on my lathe. Then I will prob cut out the pattern for router mount etc and cast them.
The bed is extended to 1200mm to fit some larger parts in, Cant wait to get it going
