Hi,
I've been sifting thru previous posts in this section of the forum and can't find any definitive answer to the question.

I won a set of 4 Vexta 2 phase, 0.9 degree steppers off ebay and want to know if I should mess with putting them on my soon to be cnc router.
The router will use ACME 1/2 x 10 screws with dumpster nuts. I'm starting with 80/20 bearings and will upgrade to rails later. I anticipate the gantry weighing in at 20 pounds or less.

What are the pros and cons of the 400 step per rev motor?
Seems microstepping would be more difficult or problematic.

I believe the only difference is that you get higher resolution which is good for precision work and cutting tight radius's. I'm not totally certain, but 0.9 per step may also have 30% less torque then a similiar size motor with 1.8 per step.

The steppers I have now are running in 1/8 step mode.

Should I run these in 1/4 step mode?

Not unless you can't send steps fast enough to keep up.

As usual I've posted before doing all my homework.
It appears that the motors I've got are high inductance type.
Specs are 5.4v at 1.5amps, 8 wire.
Would they be better driven with something like the Linistepper?
I had planned to use the HobbyCNC board.

The higher the voltage the better

I have used many .9 deg Vexta steppers, and 1.8 deg. steppers, in my opinion the .9 deg steppers run smoother at full stepping. When micro-stepping the difference is not as much.
