1st Time building a custom machine

Hi all, I'm attempting to design a custom thermoforming machine and I'm considering using a CNC controller to run it. I've worked with HAAS machines for years but have no experience building my own controllers in a DIY capacity. What I really need is a controller/driver set up that can accommodate (2) axes and (4) pneumatic solenoids, with the ability to set up a work offset being a critically specific need. What I've got is a pretty good idea but no knowledge to execute. Any help recommending systems (someone plz just hold my hand -whimpers-) would be appreciated, thx!

    Hi,
the majority of CNC hobby control solutions will handily do as you require.

I will restrict myself to the four main hobby CNC solutions discussed here, but there more.

I use Mach4 and have done for many years. Mach3 was very VERY popular and still works and has a loyal fanbase despite all development on it having ceased nine years ago. Either would work for you,
but Mach4 would be preferred for a new build. Mach4 all but requires a separate motion control board, and I use an Ethernet SmoothStepper, but there are others by other manufacturers which also work well
    and are cost effective.

UCCNC is a software solution made by CNCDrive, and when coupled with one of their motion control boards, the UC300 for example, makes for a good and pretty complete CNC solution.

LinuxCNC is an open source CNC software solution that runs on a PC loaded with a realtime Linux distro. It is very capable and has a wide user base. In fact the current Haas control is a variant or offshoot of
LinuxCNC....so pretty much anything that Haas can do so will LinuxCNC.

A more commercial and almost turn key solution is Centroid Acorn. It is perhaps a little less flexible than the others I've mentioned, but is well sorted and therefore favours those without CNC electronics experience.

Any of these solutions would do as you require very easily, and is a fair place to start your research.

I would suggest FluidNC or one of the other GRBL variants. They are open source and don't require expensive electronics. They send standard G code over USB and can be configured to meet your needs. Grbl is used on many 3D printers and Laser cutter / engravers. Linux CNC too fickle and learning cure is long to get it right.
