    That machine is too big... Now it has trees growing inside it!

    I'm glad someone is thinking to old people who always need reading glasses to see the details of small machines
    Good job... I'm curious to see it at work!

    A and B axis almost finished now? Looks good.

    But you don't have a lot of reach horizontally for undercuts. Like cutting the skinny waist on a statue.

    It looks like you are only going to get a few inches of reach there, unless you use a very long cutting tool?

    So where will you move this to to use it (since it obviously won't work under your tent - the z axis would hit the tent as soon as you move it up or over)?

    Are you going to install covers to keep debris out from between the belts and the the gears for the A and C axes drives?

    That is not a tent... it's the coolant enclosure

    Since I am a 5axis programmer and operator, your thread title had me a little curious. After going thru all your photos, my first though is "holy s%*@t you have waaaay to much time on your hands. Having said that, this is quite an impressive build you have going on here. I do however have a few questions, Are you concerned with moisture or condensation while your working outside like that? What about the finish on the bare metal parts? What sort of accuracy are you expecting out of the final project? Once you have it complete, will you need a foundation of some sort to have it anchored on? This is one post I will follow for updates, hope to see some videos in the future. Nice work..

    Hi, I am very exited about what you are doing. I hope that when its all done you will share lots of video even if it has problems. I am concerned with one element. The first rotary axis of the head looks to be attached only via a small bearing and shaft at a significant distance from the tool tip. I believe this one feature will significantly reduce the rigidity of the machine. I have a suggestion. If you use two large taper bearings like

    http://www.vxb.com/page/bearings/PRO...Roller/Kit7101

    with at least a foot between them, and increase the shaft size to 95mm it should be much more rigid for little additional cost.

    sorry for the intrusion,
    Ben

    Guys;
    This is one entertaining thread and one hell of a task. I can't wait to see that thing operate! Beautiful work. I'll reserve any construction comments until after you hot test it for accuracy. With a project this large, and my limited amount of knowledge with machining, I'm not qualified to critique your work. I just hope my final comments are, Awesome!
