I don't know if this would be a good idea or not, but here it goes......

Instead of mounting the motor hanging down (like the stock motor mounts), mount the motor standing up. Build a stand-off on top of the stock motor mount plate to space the motor above the machine.

    Hope that makes sense.........

    Cheers,
    Jack
    P.S. That's a BIG motor

no worries mate! i like the riser idea as that would give me more clearance at the bottum of the left over the stock motor. but i skipped my last period today to come home and draw up what i had been mulling over all day... i think im done designing the bracket

its hard to see how it goes together in the drawings.. man i need to learn how to do 3d in autocad... but there will be ~ 2.5" tall .75" diameter aluminum that i will turn on my mill (.75" is my biggest collet) which will rise the top plate from the bottum plate.

Right now im off to go pick up an order in pasadena from littlemachineshop... chris wood is a great guy its nice to be able to drive 30 min and avoid a $30 shipping charge on a surface plate...

    Cheers!

edit: had to make some changes on the motor plate as duh, forgot my y axis travel

    quick question.

is it necessary to fuse the AC line right before the vdf? or is it internally fused... i thought i had some fuse holders but looks like i don't...

    cheers

I have alwys preferred using circuit breaker in my electrical installations as you get a visual indication of the trip. That said, I understand that automationdirect offer fuse blocks as an option, i.e they are not internally fused.

That's not boring, all of us find metal cutting interesting, or we wouldn't be here.

mjrandal, thanks! i decided to stop being lazy and picked up a inline fuse holder at radioshack.

vlmarshall: I need a enclosure and flood coolant to clear the chips instead of me ha. i will look for a brush i don't know why i didn't think of that... and thanks

    skmetal: scope something like this...

theres also a .5hp one. Make sure you check the dimensions (like i didn't) lol to make sure it would work. im not sure if that would fit on a x2 after further thought... 6.9 inches in diameter. you think it would work?

yeah im not sure it would work. the motor would probably be bigger than the entire head assembly! but this dc motor has almost no torque, especially at low rpm. i was also thinking ac servo, but trying to find a motor and compatible drive is not fun, or cheap.

finished up the wiring... i mounted the vfd in that plastic case haha and i will tilt it upright and put it behind the computers. It gets hot and needs airflow but gotta watch out for the chips. cheap and functional ha

and im using autocad/dolphin cad for cad and dolphin for cam.. can't speak highly enough of dolphin cam..

    Hi Teyber,

I can't quite tell from the movie what type of cable you are using between the VFD and motor, but I suggest you Google "VFD cable" and source some shielded cable.

    thanks gang!

mjrandle: no i am not! i am using 12gauge stranded wire with plastic wire loom... it was not the cheapest and i cannot imagine vfd cable is cheap. Is it just shielded wire? i have 22 guage(or is it 18 guage) shielded stepper motor wire, i wonder if using that and double wiring the motor would work? (as in 2 cables carrying the current for 1 wire)

    Is the problem electrical interference?

And i finally got around to re-ordering the new gears. 10 emails no response from sd-spi or w/e their name is. can't recommend them. but they were the only place that had what i needed hurts to throw $100 down the toilet, especially when there is so much else id like to buy. I got a lot of little projects slowly working and i will be keeping you all updated.

    1) vfd motor with belt drive mach3 controlled
    2) sealed home switches on x,y,z
    3) install x/y motor covers(done)
    4) power drawbar
    5) enclosure

im in a "get it done" mood. look out!
    Cheers!

    edit:
    before i order...

will these work as home switches for x/y/z? i know they are limit switches but i think they will work as home switches. Just don't want to waste anymore money so double checking here

    thanks!

    hey guys

getting real annoyed here... My e-stop switch keeps activating mid-part... for about a week now. its ruined a lot of parts. I have visually checked the connections and it doesn't appear to be the e-stop wiring. What usually causes this? the computer im using is pretty darn old and im hoping its not biting the dust.

When i restart the computer the problem temporarily goes away so i think im slowly going to start building up a new computer. bad timing, i was wanting to build a enclosure before i did this.

    Thanks in advance

do you have your e-stop wires running close to any motor/ high current wires? i had mach saying "external e-stop requested" at random times, and i had my e-stop wires running next to my spindle motor wires (DUMB!), must have been coupling a current into the e-stop signal wiring. disabled the e-stop temporarily, so far i haven't had it trip.

my comp. is an old 900mhz, 512MB, 32MB graphics card. every once in a while i'll get a "driver watchdog triggered" from mach, but never when a program is running.
