Isnt it possible to add a RI laser scanning head to a 3dx unit? Also couldnt you stack encoders in each joint and use simple math to find location more accurately?

Adding laser scanner to 3dx microscribe or creating new arm
We have had good luck with our Fadals milling mostly soft steel and aluminum up to 5 axis. We are always looking for spare parts
If you have a broken down Fadal give a shout.
