Anyone know how to replace a main spindle belt for a Conquest T42 with C axis?

I've got to replace the main spindle belt on an old T42 built in '96.

The manual doesn't show a procedure for changing out the main spindle belt which is contained between mounting plates for the C axis sensor assembly. I'm hesitant to remove the C axis assembly because I reckon that there are sensitive doodads inside of it. Is there a trick to removing the belt without disturbing the C axis assembly?
