Hi, I was wondering if anyone had mounted a camera on the z-axis for remote monitoring (broken tooling, etc)? I have a 4x8, so I don't think a USB camera because of the length of cable required. Thanks!

Yep. I have a raspi zero with a wide angle lens attached. The board is $5 from microcenter and the camera is $20 from Amazon. I printed a case for it that resembles a web cam. Then I power it from a power strip I have on the gantry. I used a bolt to attach it with an aluminum plate to the z axis. It does timelapse and video and live stream through a web page local to my network.

michaelDot.com is my site. Not much on it, but I went over part of that video camera on it. Under the 4th axis stuff. Also made linear bearing rail covers that are working insanely well and I accidently made them capable of self cleaning using the vacuum at the end of a job.

Live streamed using YouTube that way you can monitor from anywhere on any device.

Here is how I set it up on my mill. It has a built in light source and actually works pretty well. Its small size allows mounting almost anywhere. I just used the mill computer to live stream, but you may have to use a seperate device depending on your software.



Here is a picture of a job running on the mill, this was taken at my sons house on his internet connected TV. He lives about 10 miles from the shop. This was about a 9 hour run so we were running dark.

Monitoring the GoPro remotely is an issue. That's why I switched mine out. Mine is about the same size and does everything onboard. Nothing else required. GoPro has a way to connect wireless, but it's terrible resolution and requires using WiFi on a device. You can stream it with a browser, but the feed is very low quality.
