I've drawn up a very basic model of my Torus Pro. It's getting the job done for what I want, but I wish it were more complete. Is there a model of the Torus Pro available for download from somewhere? Novakon, since I know you monitor this forum I have a question: would you have any issue with someone posting their self-made model so others could download it?

A model of the Torus Pro would be great. HSMworks can do machine simulation if i can get my hands on a solid model. Don't really have the time to reverse engineer the major mill components yet.

To see a facsimile posted would not be a problem for us. There are slight variations of this series of mill, but for the purpose stated, it would be a great idea as Lakesnake stated.

Whelp, I've been working on making a model today. I think it's looking pretty good so far.

Would anyone like to help with this project? I'll attach a picture of everything I've drawn up so far. The major parts that still need to be done are the column (is that what it's called?), base, and saddle. The stand, chip trays, computer box, and motors could be handy as well.

I made everything in SolidWorks. I modeled all the pieces as separate 'part' files and have brought them all together as an 'assembly'. I drew up the base, both main pieces of the column, and am about to do the saddle. I couldn't (read: didn't feel like taking the time to) measure these pieces as thoroughly as some of the others, but I think they're pretty close.

Does Solidworks have perspective view?
Since it is only a rendering here, I think it looks better when viewed with perspective. That is the art training in me I think.
It just looks wonky to me.

I can see where this would be a benefit for several things. Enclosure, pdb, atc and even some tooling plates could be designed with the help of a drawing like this.

Solidworks does have prospective view for things like renders. It has a bunch of built in materials that can apply styling and texture. We generally run with textures turned off, but they are easy to work with and yield some high quality results.

I like to work with perspective turned off, so usually don't remember to turn it back on when I'm taking a screenshot*. I also usually don't bother to put textures on my models, but I also wasn't aware that it was possible to turn them off.

* The SolidWorks that I own doesn't seem to have a "render" command as far as I can find so I just take a screenshot. I also can't seem to make antialiasing work. I'm assuming my graphics card drivers are messed up somehow.

Can you save them in something other than a Solidworks file?

I can open a lot of different file types, but that ain't one of em.

Exporting to DXF is always a pain. How about IGS files. Can you open those?

I tested the "Head shroud 01.IGS" file with Rhino (v. 4) and it opened nearly perfectly. All the curved surfaces look nice and the dimensions seem to be correct. The only problems were that all the surfaces were separated (select all > join fixed that) and it opened in an odd orientation (a quick rotate fixed that).

I can open that type fine in Turbocad.

I do notice when I am working on a drawing in Turbocad and expect to produce nice renders later, I have to save the file in a Turbocad format.
When I save in dxf, it looses all the materials, colors, lighting etc that I have used. Turbcad files will keep every bit of the data as it was before you closed the file.
I imagine solid works would be the same.

Yeah, it seems like most programs will only play nicely with their own file type. Rhino might be a slight exception. The native SolidWorks file type has the added bonus that it shows the construction history and since it's a parametric modeler you can also go in and change the dimensions easily. It's very cool! I haven't used Alibre, but I imagine it's the same way. Another cool thing is the assembled file, "Torus Pro 01.SLDASM", is put together in such a way so that you can actually "grab" the head or the bed and move it around - I've set it up so the movements are restrained to the mechanical limits of my actual machine.

The IGS file opens great in Turbocad. I don't have the Pro, but I still like the drawing.

The solidworks parts import fine into alibre, this will make a nice addition to my 3D printed 1/4 scale model collection, thanks for sharing.

You're welcome. Wow, those are way cool! I imagine the model is good enough for your purpose, but since I had to basically guess with some of the dimensions you might want to hold off on printing for a little while. For instance: I didn't have a way to measure the depth of the column at the very top (it's covered). I also didn't even try to get the rear of the base or column to be correct.

It'll never be perfect though, so whenever you do end up printing it will you post a link to the video in this thread?

The g0704 was the first model, i put more detail in it since I used my real part models too.

The rest were mainly to show for scale comparison so the torus pro will be great for that.
Most of them the table, saddle and head move, some the head tilts too, I'll mod the parts for this as well to get the same thing.
I'll post the video here too as I'm sure the size comparison will be interesting, I'm looking forward to it also.
The Torus Pro would be my choice if I didn't have space and physical disability issues.
I'll keep an eye here for any updates before printing.

Hirudin, I have your models redone to printer friendly versions, scaled to 25% and sliced (made g-code).
Will take a total of 53 hours to print and use about .77 kg of filament, only about $20 worth.
Probably be a week till it's finished as time allows.
The table will move and the head will tilt but the z slide looks missing and no dovetails on the column but I can just glue the head in place.
