    BT Tooling

    G'day guys,

    I've got a 1100-3 and I'm going to buy a 1500MX.

I'm sorting through my tooling, to see what I need in BT30.

I've got a 3/4" (TTS) Shear Hog and it's been really handy, but what do I use in BT30?

Same for the Super Fly cutter... any suggestions.

What about using a regular BT30 collet chuck?

Hi and thanks for the reply.

As I mentioned, I've never worked with BT30, but that seems like a lot of "stick out".

Is that the easiest way or can you buy a BT30 fly cutter?

    Re: BT Tooling

    Hi,
I'm not familiar with BT30 either, however I've in recent months bought a new spindle that has an HSK32 tool interface....so I've been learning about tool holders also.

Most face mills require an arbor. So, the most common way is to get a BT30 arbor, say 1". Then buy a face mill that fits that arbor. A 2" face mill would be a good fit
with a 1" arbor. This is an example:

Note how there are two separate pieces, the arbor and the face mill. It may well be that you have one arbor but several face mills.

I bought an HSK32 3/4"arbor and a Valenite 11/2" face mill and it works well. Needed specialist inserts, which I did not know at the time. Found a local supplier (New Zealand)
who was able to import the required Widia inserts and got them within a fortnight. Sort of saved my bacon. Would have been pretty annoyed with myself that I bought a face mill for
which I could not buy inserts.

    Hi Craig,

The beauty of the Super Fly is it's adjustability and you can fly cut nearly 3".

I already have a 2" cutter, but I was trying to find something bigger.

The cutter (that you put in the link) is one that I've already got, but thanks for the effort.

    Hi,
then buy a 3" shell face mill that fits the same arbor.

I went through this with an 1100MX. You can get a BT30 3/4" endmill holder or ER32 collet chuck to hold TTS tools, but it's sub-optimal with that much stick out and places for tolerances to stack up. For face mills I'd get a size and weight that's reasonable for the machine. IDK what Tormach's spec is but HAAS says no more than 7" stickout, 5lbs and 2" cutting diameter on their BT30 DT1/2 machines. HAAS sometimes puts BT30 stuff on sale and it's on the upper-end of China-quality tooling. Maritool is where I go for nicer tools.

Oddly small drill chucks and JT arbors are also not common in BT30 as it seems the default for BT30 is ER tool holders for most everything.
