Can DRO encoder be used for motor control?

I am curious as to whether the linear encoders mounted directly to the moving surfaces as for the DRO, could be used for the motor encoder feedback with the appropriate setup on something like the Gecko G-Rex G100.

This would bypass any slop in the drive mechanism. There would be less wiring flying around. Perhaps it would require modification of the control loop?

If the system has a degree of backlash and the controller is not built to take dual feedback, (linear scale and motor encoder) then there can be problems of 'Hunting'.
Otherwise, linear quadrature scales appear the same as a rotary quad encoder to the control.
