Right now that is probably in her thoughts, but I haven't shown her some of the things the real experts (like yourself Khalid) have done with their machines. She has some skills with making inexpensive hand crafts like embroidery but she has no idea yet what can be done with CNC. I will continue to show her the things I make, and also some of of the work you guys are doing. She left here really impressed. CarveOne

Here are a bunch of photos taken during the cutting. Skydiver guy has my Go Pro Hero camera on loan. Everything went according to plan and I didn't embarrass myself with any tool change mistakes.
The profile circle needs to be changed to a closed vector that looks roughly like the outline of the gate. This is because the "winged V" parts are individual closed vectors. The circle works, but could be improved upon.
The 0.25" flat depth can be reduced to 0.15" and may look better for it.
There are some places around the glyphs that need minor cleanup where the flat level depth is not completely as it should be cut. Probably needs tweaking of the step-over setting.
The estimated total cut time was 1:33:73 and it actually took 1:54:35 including one quick tool change and re-zero.

looks great! i watched that show and it looks good to my eye.
Thanks! I have been doing some serious node editing to clean up the DXF file within Vcarve Pro. There is a lot more to work on though. The vector conversion from an image is rather rough in places. I'm removing thousands of nodes that are not needed in order to make straighter lines, and leaving in the nodes that make up curves. The next one I cut will look a lot cleaner.

Continuing to work on the 23" Stargate file.
The V shaped locks have been modified to look more like the one in the close-up video I posted the link to previously. The locks now have a semblance of the "fins" as well.
I removed the circle profile and drew a closely fitted circular shape that leaves some vestiges of the locks around the edge of the ring.
The flat depth has been reduced to 1/8". The borders around the glyphs are now very consistent rectangles. I've noticed that the shapes of these glyphs don't match the ones in the TV series very well at all. Most are not the same. I don't plan to change them.

Ok, I think I'm done fiddling around with this file. Estimated cut time is down to about 1 hour 30 minutes unless the step-over setting needs to be a smaller number. The Vcarve portion will be cut at 250 ipm this time, just to see how it goes.
Revwarguy, how are you coming with your version?

where did you get that stargate file?
That stargate looks amazing CarveOne.
Here is a link to a StarGate that was built within this forum by souriceaux and created by Steve T. It looks absolutely awesome and I believe that the center moves within the circle.

The original dxf file came from the Vectric.com, forums, Vcarve Pro, General, Stargate Aquagate thread. I cleaned up the vector conversion errors and made some cosmetic changes to it as an exercise in learning to edit stuff like this in Vcarve Pro. It is not an exact clone of the stargate ring. It's close enough to look good as a shop wall decoration though.
Edit : Btw, there is also a very detailed PDF blueprint file in that thread that will be useful.

Sorry, this time of year family stuff gets right in there so I didn't have much time to work on it this weekend, and I am out today as well. I am at the point to where there are so many vectors involved that it takes a long time to save or make a toolpath. Nice thing about the blueprint file though, is that the various pieces are on separate layers.
Hope to work some more on it later this week.

It's probably just as well that they didn't. Where would we buy the components for something that far advanced?
The blueprint is exactly what I remember seeing on the TV series. I usually watch it on Sunday evenings when I can get the time. Dr. Who should have such a fancy way to time travel.

This time I sacrificed fine step-over for shorter cut time and will need to do some hand work cleaning up the flat areas around the glyphs. No biggie for me, as it's all part of the fun of it anyway. It took 1 hour 13 minutes to cut this time.
I like the looks of the locks and the perimeter treatment better than the previous attempt. Good enough for a mirror frame.

Ordered a bunch of new cutters from MLCS Woodworking this morning. My 3/4" 90 degree V cutter is starting to get worn a little, so I stocked up on those, some 60 degree cutters, round nose cutters, and a 1-1/2" bottom cleaning cutter that may be useful for surface planing. The selection of cutters I have now are minimal.
Getting ready for some new projects that I don't know are coming yet.

The cutters from MLCS arrived yesterday. They look like good quality and are very sharp carbide.
The collet adapters appear to be well made, and will certainly have less run-out than my own shop made adapter (which works well enough). The proof will be in the testing of them.
2 each, 3/4"D x 90 degree x 1/2" shank
2 each, 3/4"D x 60 degree x 1/4" shank
2 each, 1/4"D x 2 flute shear down cut x 1/2" shank
2 each, 1/4"D x 2 flute ball nose x 1/4" shank
3 each, 1/2" to 1/8" collet adapter
3 each, 1/4" to 1/8" collet adapter
