Chamfering the edge or the part that is being parted off

I have a part I am machining that I want a chamfer on the edge of the part that I will be parting off because I won't be facing it afterward. I tried using the conversational chamfer but it only seems to work for a feature on the right edge. Am I doing something wrong or is it not possible? How about adding a fillet to the right inside edge of a groove?

You cannot chamfer on the backside of the part - towards headstock - in the conversational PP. I had to do the same thing making some parts and finally did it in fusion to chamfer it and then part. It will leave a little nub on the part.

I wonder if there is a good reason for it or if it's just an oversight?

I am not sure, I did not ask Tormach about it. I assume it is because you are cutting into the full diameter of the stock.

    That is just my guess,.

You should be able to do it if you groove it first. Partway to the part. Then it should allow that cut. Then part off.
I haven't actually tried it though.

Thats what I do... cut in a bit, pull out, chamfer, and and the bottom of the chamfer resume cutoff... its easy to just manually code that - I hand edit it into any machine generated code.

Thanks guys for the replies. I ultimately ended up hand coding it but thought that the chamfer conversational should work in both directions. I did a shallow parting cut first, cut the chamfer and then finished the parting cut.

I vaguely remember seeing something about chamfering in the grooving conversational but am not in front of the machine to be able to check it out.

I just read this in the Chamfer/Fillet conversational section of the lathe manual.

"Depending on the sense of the X and Z DRO entries, the chamfer or radius feature may face away from or toward the spindle, or use back or front mounted tooling."

Sounds like it should work, but I have run into trouble with the conversational not letting you do something if it feels you are trying to use the wrong tool type. For instance, it will not let you turn a profile with a parting tool even though that type tools allows it sometimes. I do turn with my parting tool, but had to hand code that stuff.

I believe that the SprutCAM parting and/or grooving operations have an option for chamfering the edge on the headstock side.
