One question though, how far up in tap size can you go with that motor before torque becomes a problem? I know this depends upon material but for others thinking about the same thing an idea of max tap size would be nice to have.
I haven't tried large taps yet, but I expect it will easily handle 1/2". I can always increase the reduction, since speed is not a real issue. For now, I will probably put a handle, and probably a balance spring (likely an air spring) on for lifting the mechanism. No real advantage to automating it.

    Hi Ray ,

as I understand with thread forming taps the hole size changes with the material

with soft material that will deform and flow easily the hole is just big enough so you will have a full thread formed

with hard material like stainless steel the hole is larger and the tops of the thread will be missing

just like you have with "taptite" self threading machine screws
reminc CONTI - TAPTITE 2000® Screws and Bolts
thats used on car assembly lines

Exactly right, which is why I haven't started using them yet. They look attractive, but there is a learning curve.

    Awesome project, Ray !!!

Can you please post your VB code and your drawings here ? --so that the rest of us can see what you're doing?

This would make a nice project for the tapping stand I have.
