I consider myself computer illiterate although I've used one at work for the last 23 years. Having finally gotten a home computer a few years ago, I have made use of this forum several times. I like it. Pick out your operating system, register, and ask away. I'm sure someone will help you.

If I want to change the back ground on the desktop. I right click my mouse, then click on properties. I then click on desktop, the button to browse and pick a picture from file is not high lighted. I cannot change the background because nonthing happens if I pick a existing picture, and like I said I cannot click on the browse button because it is not high lighted.

Are you logged on as the administrator? Not sure if that's it, just a guess. I've never seen Windows media center.

I dont know how confident you are at registry changes but here goes.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921049/

Please do not use this tool if you are uncomfortable in this program.... This usually happens when you have been invaded with Malware or viruses. Be sure this is taken care of first before making the changes.

Let me know if this doesnt work...and I will assist more

I follow the directions as stated by Microsoft, but when I click on policys after going through the list of things to pick, the next thing they said pick was not there.

we are going to assume that a trojan has invaded your system. So take these steps to correct. and let me know how it goes

Download and save Cleandesktop to your computer from this link: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/cleandesktop.exe and double click on the cleandesktop.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\desktopclean where it needs to be to run and will automatically run the cleandesktop.vbs script

If it doesn't open then go to c:\desktopclean and double click on the cleandesktop.vbs Do not run any other file from there please unless asked to

If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run. It is not malicious.

If you get a message when you first run it "Can not find script file "blah blah blah" then don't worry just doubleclick the cleandesktop.vbs script again you sometimes get that message when a script blocker blocks the script

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your normal desktop and context menu functions.

    It will restart Explorer.

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

I have included another vbs to do this. It is named Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Have each User sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs
Open C:\ (Go to Start>Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the c:\desktopclean folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

To restore the desktop to whatever picture you normally have right click on a blank part of desktop & select properties/desktop & select your prefered picture press apply & then ok to exit and click on the desktop area then press F5

You will need to do this step for every user account

ok sorry I hadnt realized the link was dead....

lets see if there is a registry entry in
    HKEYCURRENTUSER\software\microsoft\windows\current version\policies\system

if so delete it (OTHER THAN DEFAULT)

if this does not fix it then log on as another user and see if the same is true of the display properties.

For safety sake lets backup the registry...go to File/Export and name it backup or whatever you can remember and check where it is saving...usually My Documents. After that delete those files and leave empty except default.

After I make a backup and I have it saved in my documents and then delete the files and occur a problem would it then be a matter of clicking on the backup files and they will load automatic? In other words go back to where I am now. By the way thanks for spending time helping me.

You can restore to the previous point in the registry by going to regedit and FILE/RESTORE then select the backup

Did you ever say If you have administrator rights?

If you don't have Admin. rights, most likely thats the problem.

When you start up your PC, do you have to login?

I'm running the same OS that your running (xp media center edition 2005 by H.P.), I run as administrator (that's how I roll ), I never login.

Be very careful with that registry (no joke), it can make things go wrong big time.

Windows media center 2005, is actually Win. XP Pro, the Media Center part is just extra software.
