I'm useing NC and inches too. I don't know of the differences, I'm sure someone will be around to explain, but I think NC is like the defacto extension for gcode files. I've tried a lot cam software and NC files seem to be the most common. I'm guessing tap is used more outside of the cnc industry where standard gcode is used plus other commands not used in cam files. But that's just a guess.

CamBam creates files with a .ngc file extension. I just rename it to .nc and it works fine. It's just an ascii text file. Some gcode files have a little difference in the line numbering.

One has two letters and one has three. Mach3 just reads text files, and doesn't care what the extension is.
