If it is for CNC application, a compact accurate way is with Planetary low back-lash type, like Alpha gear and Bayside & Gam Gear.

Are you looking for construction design or usage design?
If designing for gear reduction, two of the principle requirements are the required final torque and the motor to load inertia.
The input torque to output torque is a direct ratio of the reduction and the inertia ratio will be reduced by the square of the reduction.
e.g. if a 10:1 ratio is used, the motor or input torque will be increased by 10
and the inertia of the input(motor) to load ratio will be decreased by 100.
