Getting a mirror finish on polycarbonate

    Hi,

I have been asked to produce the moulds for a company that makes chocolates. I am going to make the moulds on my milling machine and they have specified that polycarbonate should be used. They have also specified that the moulds should have a mirror finish. What is the best way of acheiving this? Should I do a very fine (0.1mm?) step over with a ball nose bit and then polish the moulds with wet and dry paper?

Is there a way to get a mirror finish straight out of the milling machine? Could I attach a polishing bit to the machine?

    Thanks
    Jack

Depending on the plastic you may be able to flame polish it.

Look in to using a headlight lens refinishing kit. They come with the various grades of sanding material and polishing compounds to get a good finish on plastics. You will need to ensure that the chemicals are 100% removed... I also doubt you will get the finish you are looking for with plastic - are they sure it is possible (have they done it before and/or can they show you the finish they need on existing molds so you know what you are "in for"?).
