    Re: Hoss's G0704

    No good mod goes unpunished!

So I have my head off to put the spacer for the Y extension on. Ran into a few issues and have a question.

Issue #1 - one of the 3 T bolt holes in the head is about 10° off! So with the 120° spacing for the holes in the spacer block, it won't line up. I thought I would try to redial it using the spacer - which was screwed firmly on - but the drill won't bite, its just off enough to mess with the drill bit.

Issue # 2 - With the large rectangular spacer, the two attachment holes at the top run into the belt drive mount holes. The 2 at the bottom don't are too close to the edge. I moved the two bottom ones up and in a bit. The two top ones I moved to the sides so they tap into the thin web along the opening's edge.

Now the question - Do you use a center bolt to attach the head or simply rely on the 3 T bolts? I have a bolt the correct length but I can't snake it into the space to get it into the hole.

    So close...

    Cheers,

You could use your other mill maybe to use an endmill to slot the hole in the head that is off, or in your spacer to match.
I replaced the center bolt with a stud and a nut so it can slide on just like the 3 bolts.

Yeah, I'm setting up the X2 to move the hole in the spacer since I don't have enough Z to do the head.

That makes sense with the stud and nut! Thanks. Do you happen to recall the stud size (thread) and length? I didn't see it in the drawings anywhere.

    cheers,

    It's an M12-1.75 but I don't remember how long I cut it.
The stock bolt is 40mm so about 3 inches longer than that I suspect.

Do the ball bearings in the C7 ballnuts need to be changed or is that just the Rotion ball bearing?

    Re: Hoss's G0704

The C7's should be fine as is, they are far better than rotons.
They can be repacked if you wish but most are good to go.
You'd have to take them apart to measure what balls are inside and go up from there, .0005 bigger perhaps but it's trial and error to find what works best.

Hey Hoss, FINALLY after all this time I have my extend Y mod done, and the machine is trimmed and milling! The stud is 150mm x M12-175 fyi. McMaster carries it.

My Y travel is now 8.85" and that is perfect to double my production by being able to mill 2 rows of 3" diameter parts now instead of just a single row. Now I just need to finish off the ATC and I'll be even more productive.

    Thanks again,

Thanks. That will save time. Next up is to get the gears ordered for the belt drive. I think I will try the same ratio as the 1100kw motor even though I have a 3 phase 1.5 hp motor.

Here's a preview of some options for my original Head Spacers for the Y axis Extension I originated years ago.
They'll be available for free on my website soon in sldprt. format with blueprints and stock/hardware lists.
    Stay tuned.

^Sweet. Thanks for that, Hoss. I like the looks of that better than the temporary spacer you had. Any plans to make these for testing / photo / video opportunities?

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Never say never but I have the 5th axis on mine as a spacer so not really needing to make one.
