    Hypertherm torch touch

    Hello,

I'd like to know if there's a way to detect when the torch's tip has touched the material (prior to starting it) with a powermax 1000.

I was thinking of building a probing electrical device, closing a relay when the tip of the torch touches the material, but the "body" of the T60 mechanized torch does not conduct to the tip.

    Thanks.

Open up your operators manual.....go to the mechanized torch parts page...use the Ohmic retaining cap and the mechanized shield. The cap has a tab to attach a wire to, which is at the same potential as the shield. This has been used for many years on a variety of different height controls as an initial height sensing device.

Beyond the ohmic cap (part #220061) do I need any other part that differs from the standard torch assembly? Because with just that cap (replacing the standard 120928 cap) the "tab" on the ohmic cap is not in contact with the torch's tip.

    Thanks.

There should be electrical contact between the tab (for an electrical connector) on the cap, and the torch shield. There is no part called a tip (in a Hypertherm torch).

You should be using (for 60 Amp cutting) the 120930 shield, the 220061 retaining cap, the 120931 nozzle, 120926 electrode, 120925 swirl ring.

If you look closely at the retaining cap when all of the parts are installed on the torch...you will see a small tab that makes contact with the shield.

For other amperages follow the part numbers listed on the mechanized cut charts listed in your manual....if you are using fine cut parts...use the 220404 shield.
