    Is my BMC-40SLV toast?

A week ago I had a problem with a Lathe I was retrofiting. I fired the computer up on this lathe and the power supply (for the computer running EMC) threw sparks, loud pop, the whole shebang. Strangely that computer still worked, but the shop computer mobo fried. It had a big burn spot where the com port plugs in. That com port was connected to my Hurco. Now when I fire the hurco up, I get a blinking cursor in the bottom left corner of the left screen. (ultimax 2) Any idea what might be wrong?

Thanks for any input... this is turning out to be a terrible day... :S

1st guess would be the power supply in the hurco computer. Probably lost the 5vdc side.

Does anyone know the pinout on those power supplies... I can't find my wiring diagram book... it's the one with 11 screw type terminals on the bottom... My god, I hope it's the power supply!

    thanks again!

Your problem is more than likely the CPU though. Take off the little RS232 board and see if it'll fire up without it. If it doesn't, replace the MC1488 and MC1489 chips under the graphics card - U14 & U15.

Failing that, it may be the CRT controller.

    Bloke,

By little rs232 board, which do you mean? there are two little boards attached to the cpu board, the 'graphics board' with the NEC chip on it, and the other little one. Also, (though admittedly not having looked for them yet) is there a good place to hunt for the 1488 and 1489 chips? (newark, ebay, anywhere?)

thanks so much for you help!

The RS232 board is the little one with the wide ribbon cable. The 1488 and 1489 are readily available from most component suppliers. It may be worth ordering a few to go on the RS232 board as well.

    Bloke.

    I love you.

It was U2 on the RS 232 card.

    Running parts today.

I would give you a big terible sloppy boy hug if you were not 2000 miles away...

My God, I have nothing to say, but I can't stop typing... so happy

If you ever need anything Bloke, just let me know!
