    Jaw stuck on chuck

    Hey everyone,

I have a 4 jaw chuck that I got with a lathe that I already sold, but the buyer did not want the 4 jaw chuck.

3 of the 4 jaws move very nicely, but one is completely stuck.

I am assuming it's either rust, or debris got in there, but I cannot turn it with the key no matter what.

I was thinking of pouring some mineral spirits right over the jaw and into the gears that turn it, hoping if it is rust, or debris, that this loosens it enough to turn it and get it out to properly clean it.

    Does this sound OK?

If not, any other suggestions would be great.

Overall the chuck is in great shape, very clean and nice, it's an 8" 4 jaw chuck, I just never used it as I always used my 3 jaw chuck.

Got Acetone? How about automatic trans fluid? Mix the 2 50/50 and let it soak. Or PB blaster available at any hardware store. Kroil is the best, but also $$.

I do have acetone, I don't have auto trans fluid, but if I can get it at an autozone I will.

Is soaking a risk for rust?

If I soak it in acetone, how do I clean it after I remove to get the acetone off?

    Thanks much for the reply!

Acetone evaporates quickly, it will remove itself in no time.

No risk of rust, and the acetone is just there to make the ATF penetrate quickly, it will evaporate quickly leaving the ATF to do its job.

OK, thanks much, I will give it a shot.

How should I clean off the ATF after I am done?

And do I literally pour the mixture in a bucket and soak the whole chuck?

Just pour it around the jaw, and a rag works wonders.😳
