Linear encoders + kanalog. Wiring question

    Hi!
Have bought kflop&kanalog and now try "implanted" it in my cnc machine. also i have 3 linear encoders (scales) to XYZ axes. It has nine-pin TTL signal. how to connect it? kanalog has 4 pins to connect encoders (A+, A-, B+, B-). Each linear encoder have onlu A and B wire and Z label wire.

Did you confirm you don't have the RS422 model (centre)?

yes, i have (I hope) 9-pin TTL model.
at least i was bought it as a ttl scales on ebay :-)

Yes, you would have been better off with the 422 if there was a choice.

You cannot connect single ended encoders to kanalog. You will need something like this

    Differential Line Driver, CNC4PC

    to make it work.

The only other option I believe is to remove the jp5 connection from kanalog and use it to connect directly to k-flop. This would cause some of the encoder outs on kanalog to no longer be usable.

I believe z can be connected to any 5v tolerant input. I'm not sure if it would need a resistor. I'm thinking it would only be used during homing to give a very accurate home position.

Re: Linear encoders + kanalog. Wiring question

when i was make a choice on ebay i was focused that scales will be used with kflop. as you know, kflop like ttl interface. but it was a bad news that pair kflop+kanalog don't like it!!!
yes, i think about linear driver or another converter, but as i inderstand i need to convert ttl->rs422 near the scale? not after the end of 3m cale? so i need to to disassemble and resolder new scales? i'm afraid that i can broke it.
another solution is to connect ttl signal to kflop. but as i understand it's not good solution? i need some terminal plate between kflop and scales because kflop is not optoisolated.
so both solution is not good......
may be someone can suggest a third variant?

Re: Linear encoders + kanalog. Wiring question

You can use the 5v from k-flop to power the scales and should not need additional isolation. I have connected 5v encoders directly to k-flop with no issues so it is not a problem. Also you can buy differential converters like I posted. Cut the cable to the scales leaving 1-2 feet. Then wire the scale to the line driver using the screw terminals to the appropriate wires listed in your diagram. Then purchase shielded cat5 cables to go from the line driver to kanalog.

You don't need to convert to rs422 at all. K-flop or kanalog with line driver will read your encoders as they are assuming there a b z comm and ground like you mentioned.

so i can't use linear drivers after the ends of cables before kanalog?

You can try and it may be fine. They work best the closer they are to the encoder but may work fine closer to kanalog. It is worth a try. If it doesn't work you can always go the other route later. No harm no foul.

How long do the cables need to be to work in your system?

cabler from scales to controller is about 2.5-3m

Re: Linear encoders + kanalog. Wiring question

I used single ended encoders to k-flop for a while with no issues. The cables were a bit over 3m. It is recommended not to use single ended encoders over about 1.5m. That is why I say it may work with the line driver closer to kanalog. If the noise in the system cause the encoders to miscount then you can change things around later. It's definitely worth a try. The only thing I can say for certain is you have to use the line driver to connect to kanalog. It will not work without the complimentary signals.

Something like a 26LS31 will convert them.
